This is a full-speed, native USB 2.0 host port. It has a standard, full-size USB A connector. In fact, it shares a double USB A connector with USB Edison (from Intel® Edison module).
The USB host port allows you to connect any smartphone or tablet with a USB device port or USB OTG port. If you are more familiar with programming, you can connect any compatible USB device. If you are a beginner, use the device which is supported by our libraries.
If you use RoboCORE with a tablet or a smartphone, you don’t need to charge it separately - data connection and charging (up to 1A) can be provided simultaneously. The maximum total current you can draw from both USB host ports together is 1 A.
RoboCORE extends the USB host interface from the Intel® Edison module to the external connector, shared with the USB core. USB Edison is a high-speed USB 2.0 port and, of course, is available only when you have the Intel® Edison module included in RoboCORE.
The maximum total current you can draw from both USB host ports together is 1A. If you don't use Intel Edison, this port can be used as a power source for Raspberry Pi - this is comfortable because you only need USB A ↔ micro USB B cable for powering the Raspberry Pi.
